At the center of a woman's complex 'image' are her hormones. The rise and fall of these hormones influences all aspects of emotions, mental wellness and physical wellness.
Sex hormones include, but are not limited to estrogen, testosterone, progestrone and DHEA.
When a woman's hormones are in sync, she will feel incredible. She will have energy and vitality. And, she is far less likely to experience negative hormonal symptoms throughout her fertile years, right through
peri-menopause, to menopause.
Unfortunately all it takes is one alteration to this perfectly balanced cycle for hormone havoc to occur.
We are being bombarded by estrogens and other hormones on a daily basis.
Synthetic estrogens found in fertility drugs, birth control pills, improper use of plastics, and hormone therapies are major sources of
estrogen that contribute to an overload of estrogen in our bodies.
Hormone-mimicking foods also add to the estrogen-dominance problem and the obesity epidemic.
Too much fat on the body adds to hormone imbalance because fat cells, through an enzyme, convert testosterone to estrogens. The more fat cells you carry, the higher your total estrogen level.
Excess insulin, or insulin resistance, common in those overweight, also causes estrogen dominance. As insulin levels spike, estrogen is secreted in higher amounts.
As well, cortisol, our stress hormone, promotes estrogen dominance and triggers more weight gain, creating a vicious cycle of the production of more fat cells that become fatter and produce more estrogen.
Doctors and informed women are now learning that estrogen can be a very dangerous hormone. Women were fooled into trusting that the birth
control pill was safe because of its 'low' dosage. What was not revealed is that 'low' dosage simply meant the dose was lower than it had been in previous years, and that it still contained many times a womans natural level of estrogen.
Future research on the pill will confirm what we have learned about estrogen and progestin used in menopausal concerns - that the pill is
contributing to hormone disease in women.
Hormones are powerful messengers that direct and control every function in our bodies, from heart rate to orgasms. Our feelings of being 'sexy' are hormone driven. Sexual desire and satisfaction are affected by hormone imbalance.
Sex is a central part of who we are. It is the basis of some of our most meaningful relationships. Yet 43 percent of women have NO sex drive.
What is being done about it in the research community?
