We seem to have become fixated on ridding our homes of any unpleasant odors. We are self-conscious about foods, pets, mold, clothing, and even our own body odors. We peruse the supermarket aisles, searching for the perfect home scents to freshen our environment. We want the experience of walking into our houses as delightful as a spring morning.

There are so many choices in both fragrance and delivery method that it’s hard to imagine if you haven’t seen them. Whatever our mood, there are bound to be scented candles or scented room deodorizers to match. It is no problem to go from smelling freshly ironed linens, to a tropical rain forest, and on to sun-ripened berries. The creativity of those coming up with all the ideas for home scents appears to be unlimited.

There is also seemingly no end to the ways of getting these scented room deodorizers working in our environments. You’ll find scented candles in just about any size, shape, and flavor that you can imagine. They double as decorative accents as well as changing the odor of our rooms.

Perhaps you’d rather have your home scents in solid form. This style of scented room deodorizers come in an unobtrusive jar that you can place discreetly out of sight. When you remove the lid, the solid material absorbs the offending odors from the room, and replaces them with a light, pleasant fragrance.

Another popular way to release home scents is to use spray. There are numerous brands, scents, and types available. Some come in aerosol cans, while others plug into a wall outlet and automatically release a burst every so many minutes. You can usually program these to operate at specific intervals, or find those that are pre-set. You can also find scented oils or use essential oils mixed in carrier oil to hand spray.

These are just a few of the many scented air fresheners manufactured to create more appealing home scents. Some of the newer ones are even classified as air neutralizers, the idea being to have no scent at all in the room.

The big ad agencies know how to manipulate us into wanting products we didn’t know were so crucial to our lives. For example, before the onslaught of all the hype about maintaining pleasing home scents, we would normally just open a window to freshen stale air in our homes. Now we’re finding ourselves surrounded by promotions on television, in magazines, on the Internet, and in promotional flyers in our daily newspapers. Something we may not have thought much about in the past now comes across as a necessity.

One major concern about these scented air fresheners is their safety. Anything we put into our air be it cigarette smoke, cooking smells, or a home scents, we naturally inhale into our lungs. The high rates of lung cancer and other respiratory ailments are testimony to the fact that there are definitely harmful substances permeating the air we breathe.

Many of us are becoming more likely to check the ingredients of the foods we eat, but what about these items that change the odors in our homes? There is actually a great deal of data about scented candles and the potential dangers they pose. A number of them are made from petroleum products that emit dangerous toxins when burned.

For years candle wicks contained lead. It’s no longer legal to make candles with them in the US, but many candles are imported from countries where the practice is still in place.

When it comes to scented oils, these also are often poisonous to us. Any oil that we inhale should be a pure essential oil, extracted from a biological substance, such as a plant or tree bark, and not treated chemically.

Sprays, oils, and solids used to make our home air more pleasant to inhale, often contain carcinogens. One common ingredient is dichlorobenzene, which not only affects the nervous system, liver, and kidneys, but is stored in body fat. It’s frightening to think that scented air fresheners could actually kill us and our loved ones, including our pets.

All of these frightening facts don’t mean that you can’t use odor altering products to make your environment smell more pleasing. They just mean that you need to exercise caution. Only buy items that are labeled as all-natural. There are plenty of home air fresheners you can buy that aren’t manufactured with harsh chemicals. Beeswax candles with cotton wicks and any air freshener made with pure oils will give you the results you desire without making you ill. The Fuller Brush Company makes candles and other home scent items that won’t harm you.

In many ways our lives are becoming more complicated, even though technology is supposed to make them easier. There are areas, including home scents, in which simplicity is actually safer. We don’t need to pollute our indoor air with unhealthy chemicals in the name of smelling good.
