For years women have been searching for the answers relating to their bras - why are they so uncomfortable, why can I not find one to fit me - why should I have to wear something everyday which irritates me beyond belief. Many women find a bra that's comfortable and wear it to death.
The problem is, the bra may be comfortable (for the first half an hour) but the fit is not right, thus the wires dig in and the under-band shifts about all day causing red, sore marks under their bust and around their back.
And who's to say that this is not causing irepairable damage to the underlying breast tissue? There has not been any scientific study into the resulting damage caused by wearing an ill-fitting under-wired bra, yet Breast Cancer is becoming more and more of a threat to the women in society today.
Not only the terrifying threat of cancer, but the stress and strain caused to the neck, back and shoulders of any woman with a DD or larger wearing the wrong sized bra, can cause serious problems with posture. Osteopaths have the right idea by informing women they should be measured correctly, but unfortunately, women still have to be incredibly lucky to find someone that knows what they are doing, so the problem is compounded.
It all starts from puberty. When I was a pubescent, my mother took me to the local lingerie store and had me professionally measured - these were the days when lingerie stores only had trained staff, it seemed to be important to stores back then that all staff knew the correct method of fitting lingerie so as to give the best possible service to their customers. Not now it seems.
A recent trip to several lingerie stores shocked and horrified me when in the teen-bra section there were about 10 wired bras available and two, very young non-wired bras available, teddy bears and mice are not the thing to sell teenagers these days! Young developing breast tissue should not be confined within a wire. The tissue is spread wide accross the chest wall and is not yet defined by the 'spring'. Encasing it in a wire too early will put pressure on not yet fully formed cells and can only ever cause damage. Ladies PLEASE ensure your children are correctly measured and only wear non-wired bras!
With the growing number of larger independent lingerie chain stores, and the lower priced section of the market flooded with cheap bras you can buy off the shelf - with no staff to help you, and nowhere to try them on, added to this the imeasurable quantity of online bra shops professing to be able to instantly tell you your size if you put two measurements the the two boxes provided. The 'Try Before You Buy' concept has been blown out of the water.
In these days of busy lives - women work full time for longer, maybe choosing not to have families because their careers are more important, the time it takes to go lingerie shopping and guess your size is simply not possible, having to try on anything from 10-20 bras would make anyone hate the thought.
The fact is this: you cannot measure over your bust to gain an accurate cup size.
Professional corsetieres if they measure you at all will only ever measure your under-bust.
If they need them, special tape markings allow them to see which under-band size you are, and then they will guess the cup size - yes guess. There is no mathematical method to determining this, how can there be? we are not robots, we are human and everyone is different.
The-Perfect-Fit is a small company based in the UK, dedicated to ensuring as many women as possible are taught the correct method of working out their correct bra size. Knowing that women should be measured two or three times a year, if ladies are taught the method they don't need to worry that the fitters in shops don't know what they are doing.
They can measure themselves, work out their cup size - having been given instructions on how to work it out, via the website- then choose only three bras when they go shopping - one of which when they try them on, should fit perfectly.
There are case studies on the website, both from online and offline customers, and some very interesting statistics from the homepage survey, which correctly identifies that over 80% of women who have completed the survey are not happy with the fit of their bras.
