After using my own body for over twenty years of experimentation and reading, I have discovered how to gain weight for maximum energy and strength. Being the biggest isn't always better. It's how you gain weight that matters.

For most of my life I have been a very slim person with a high metabolism. My father owned a gym and I used to marvel at the big guys in the gym lifting huge amounts of weight. When I turned twenty years old I decided that I was tired of being skinny. I wanted to look good in a t-shirt and be able to lift heavy weights in the gym. I read everything I could at the time about how to gain weight since I didn't know a lot about nutrition, and decided that in order to get big I would have to eat big.

I decided that I was going to eat food with a lot of calories, carbs, protein and a moderate amount of fat. I went from eating three meals a day to eating eight to nine meals a day! I became obsessed with getting big. I would literally eat every two hours. I would even set my alarm clock for the middle of the night to get up to drink a protein shake. I also started to lift heavy weights and tried to get plenty of rest. I was working out three days a week, just like Dorian Yates who had won his first Mr. Olympia at the time.

After two months of hard work, many people asked me if I was working out and told me that I was getting huge. I finally looked good in a t-shirt and jeans. My squat was going up every time I went to the gym. I was eating so much each day I felt like I was living to eat. My waist went from 29 inches to 34 inches in three months.

On the downside, I had gas most of the time. My body was breaking out all over. I rationalized that my acne was a result of an increase in testosterone which was good for me. In reality, I think it was from all of the dead food I was dumping into my body without much fiber. Every day I drank whole milk and about two whey protein shakes. I ate meat three times daily, had yogurt, several eggs and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I also ate processed foods like cookies, loaded with trans fats. I hardly had any fruits and vegetables and ate at McDonalds and Burger King several times a week for added protein.

I have always believed in self improvement and began reading to gather more information. After gaining forty pounds of weight in about six months, I slowly started to decrease my weight over the next few years. I didn't go on a diet. I simply learned more about health and nutrition and started experimenting. I bought a juicer and started juicing raw fruits and vegetables. This was great because it took a lot of stress off of my digestive system and gave me tons of energy through the enzymes that were already present in these living foods. I started to eat organic foods. My diet consisted of only one meal a day of meat, which most of time was organic free range chicken and high quality carbs and vegetables.

I began incorporating items such as organic hemp powder in my daily shake. I tried to incorporate a moderate amount of fiber in my diet with foods like good old fashioned oatmeal and vegetables. I started to take a high quality fish oil. When I got up in the morning I drank a glass of water with a squeeze of lemon in it which helped to alkalize my body.

So, what were my results? I don't look as big in a t-shirt as I used to, but I have much more energy now. I think clearly and I move fast. I don't have gas anymore and my skin is a lot clearer. People are now telling me that I look a lot younger than I did ten years ago.

I still lift weights; in fact, I can lift more weight than I used to. I also move faster from set to set and bang out more reps than before. I ended up losing thirty of the forty pounds that I initially gained. Some people who remember me when I had more weight ask what happened as I really 'looked' good back then – but I know the truth. If you want to live a long, vigorous life you have to go beyond how you look in a t-shirt. You need to be healthy and gain weight the healthy way.

My grandfather, who I loved very much, was always the biggest guy around. Sure, he was strong also (he was 6ft 2 in and 275 pounds), but later in life he paid a price for his overeating. As he grew older he developed diabetes, high blood pressure and arthritis. The diabetes made him weak. He became slow and couldn't walk after a while. He would often fall a sleep where he was sitting. All this could have been avoided if he was had a healthy diet.

In summary, your body is a marvel of hundreds of thousands of years of evolution. It is an amazing feedback system that will give you energy to think, feel, and move with vitality if you give it what it needs and keep away from the bad things that pollute it with toxins. It's that simple. Forget about fad diets and the new drug of the day. It comes down to basics. Being the biggest isn't always better. It's how you gain weight that matters.
