Everybody has a family history, right? Did Aunt Kelly have irritable bowel syndrome, or did Grandpa Frank and your father deal with osteoporosis? Knowing your family’s medical history may provide a clue as to what kinds of health concern or genetic disease may strike you. In addition, knowing your family history in regard to medical conditions at least, offers you the best chance to beef up your resistance through nutritional supplements, vitamins (http://www.mitamins.com), or any other health precautions.

So what if Grandpa Frank and your father both dealt with osteoporosis? Does that mean you’re definitely going to develop it also? Not necessarily, and you may even be able to increase your odds of not developing it by taking the right kinds of nutritional supplements that are geared to providing the right vitamins for strong bones and muscle connective tissue. This is not to say that some people have total control over their health, because many times, we don’t. However, giving your health a fighting chance is the idea behind eating right, exercising regularly and making sure that your body receives an adequate amount of vital vitamins and minerals in your diet or through nutritional supplements (http://www.mitamins.com).

By examining your family history, anyone will be able to tell if there is a predisposition toward acquiring certain genetically inherited health concerns. However, just because parents had a medical condition doesn’t automatically mean that children will inherit it also. It just means that the chances of offspring developing the same condition are higher than not. If you’re concerned with such a possibility, discuss the situation with your doctor or health care provider and, if necessary, have tests done that may set your mind at ease, or serve to alert you to potential problems before they grow more severe.

Some cancers seem to pass down from family members, such as ovarian or breast cancers. Other family trees display generations of matriarchs with stooped or hunched shoulders that may today indicate osteoporosis or other bone degenerative conditions. Knowing these things gives children, grandchildren and other family members a chance to fight certain conditions through the use of specially formulated vitamin and mineral supplements, or nutritional supplements, which are created to address certain issues.

Generally, try to search back through at least three generations when looking for a medical history of your family. The most prevalent to watch for are cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, mental issues and asthma. Try to determine if they smoked or otherwise worked in positions where environmental hazards would have caused the condition, such as if Uncle Jake worked in a coal mine, or Aunt Tizzy died because of an unknown drug interaction. The more information you can find, the better when it comes to discerning whether a genetic disease is actually being passed down from generation to generation or health conditions were caused by other means.

A medical family history can be used to gauge the likelihood that you or your loved ones may inherit a specific condition, and whether or not that health concern is something you can prevent through the use of proper diet, exercise and taking adequate nutritional supplements, if you don’t get enough vitamins from your diet. Whether Aunt Jane had bowel cancer or Grandma had schizophrenia, knowing your family history will help you to take steps to ensure that you take the best care of yourself that you know how. Armed with knowledge, it is possible to break that genetic disease link that has been dogging your family since the Civil War. The key to good health (http://www.mitamins.com) is knowledge.
