I speak with a lot of clients in my business… the majority of them want to lose weight. The first question I ask of all my clients is; Why?
And 9 out of 10 of my new clients will have the same response. Some vague comment that its not healthy, that they will look and feel better, blah blah blah.
And of course they are right. These certainly are reasons……but in order to be successful at anything in life, including weight loss, our reasons must be specific and motivating to us. They must invoke an emotional response, either negative or positive.
If your reasons for losing weight are not better than “I just need to lose a few pounds….no reason really, just my belt is a bit tight” Chances are you will not muster up enough motivation to stay the course. Only when your reasons, either based on pain or pleasure, are strong will you succeed.
Along with writing down your goals, daily weekly, monthly and long term, and the way you will get there……also write down WHY .What are your reasons for wanting to lose weight?
Some pleasure reasons are, to look great, to buy new clothes, to feel healthy, to live longer, to gain energy, to play sports with your kids, to impress your spouse. The list goes on.
Some pain reasons are heart attack risks, diabetes risks, cancer risks, The thought of gaining 10 pounds every year if you don’t stop now, feeling lethargic, feeling self conscious.
Write down as many of these reasons as you can. Make them personal. Visualize them as often as you can. Picture yourself in that new size 6 dress, or on the beach. Remember why you are doing this. The specific reasons you will lose weight. Look at those reasons in the morning, at night, or anytime you find yourself reaching for that butter cookie.
