Top 10 Cosmetic Procedures for Men

Recently, a middle-aged gentleman came to my office, referred from his primary care physician. When he scheduled the appointment over the phone, it was for "eyelid" surgery, but he was very vague about the nature of his problem with my receptionist. I assumed it was for repairing a problem regarding obstruction of vision since the gentleman anticipated that his health insurance would cover the cost. When I finally saw him in consultation, I quickly realized that the many concerns the gentleman brought up regarding his eyelids were of a cosmetic nature. He was very reluctant to come forth and declare that he wanted to have cosmetic eyelid surgery, so I played along and blamed insurance companies for always being reluctant to pay for
"these types of things." We both understood each other. He wanted to improve the appearance of his eyelids, but did not want to admit even to me that he is seeking cosmetic surgery.

The purpose here is to illustrate that men are increasingly seeking cosmetic treatments ranging from Botox injections to tummy tucks to improve their appearance. Being young has its advantages, but combining years of wisdom and experience while still appearing young has even more advantages in today's competitive job market. According to Daniel Hamermesh, a professor at the University of Texas who has researched the economic of beauty, good-looking people earn as much as 15% more
than their average or ugly counterparts. But even beyond their careers, many middle-aged men are finding themselves single again and hope to gain a competitive edge in the dating world as well. It is no wonder that 1.1 million men underwent cosmetic
treatments in 2006, an increase of 8% since 2000.

So what are men doing to make themselves look and feel better?  The American Society of Plastic Surgeons noted the following in 2006:

Top Five Non-Surgical Cosmetic Treatments

* Botox
* Laser Hair Removal
* Microdermabrasion
* Chemical Peel
* Laser Resurfacing

Top FiveSurgical Procedures

* Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)
* Eyelid Surgery
* Liposuction
* Hair Transplantation
* Male Breast Reduction

For men, Botox can certainly help them look less angry or tired, more refreshed, and younger, without a large commitment in terms of time, money, or recovery. Nose reshaping and Eyelid surgery top the list of surgical procedures that men seek to refine their facial features. Eyelid surgery - to remove overhanging skin from the upper eyelid and relieve puffiness of the lower lids - is a fairly easy way to refresh, enhance and rejuvenate the aging face. It is no wonder that eyelid surgery is most popular facial
cosmetic procedure performed for either sex.

Changing attitudes towards cosmetic surgery, a work force where 45% are older than age 55, and the omnipresence of cosmetic surgery on television shows like "Dr. 90210", "Extreme Makeover", and "Nip/Tuck" have definitely brought the topic of
self-improvement through cosmetic surgery out from under the shrouds of mystery, and let men know what is available to them. With the success of non-surgical wrinkle fillers and Botox, men have found it easier (and less expensive) to take that first leap
of faith into the world of cosmetic enhancement – an investment that many say has paid off.
