Sexual assault is any form of sexual contact or activity against a person's will and without consent. It is not limited to rape but you are sexual assaulted when you are kissed, fondled, or have sexual intercourse without your consent. It can happen to both women and men. Sexual assaults are committed not only by strangers but they may also be committed by someone you know such as a friend, date or partner.

Casual acquaintance is the most prevalent form of sexual assault on college campuses. It has been predicted that most of the college going girls know the attacker when they are sexually assaulted. The number of men much smaller but they also experience sexual assault.

Sexual assault can have devastating effects on the survivor. It can cause both psychological anguish and physical injury. It is an offence. The victim is filled with feeling of anger, guilt, betrayal, and humiliation that is difficult to comprehend by anyone who has not been sexually assaulted. A feeling of distrust is encircles the victim she neither trusts others nor herself. The survivor is filled with fear, very low self esteem and despair. There is emotional shock, disbelief, embarrassment, shame, guilt and depression in the survivor.

The victim feels powerlessness due to the terrible experience especially rape and lives in a world of her own with all negative thoughts. It has been reported that17-23% of female students have been assaulted by people they know. This is often when they are on a date. Teenagers are severely affected by pregnancy due to sexual assault.

This is how you can try to keep yourself safe and protected:
• It is always advised to females to be alert and observant to protect them from sexual assault. There are different ways you can be made victims of sexual assault. There are date rape drugs that may be colorless, odorless and tasteless. The most widely used date rape drug is alcohol. You should keep a close watch on your drink, and do not accept drinks from another person.
• Learn to read people, their minds and eyes. At times the way a person talks to you and looks at you can indicate some negative vibes. Trust your instincts and react accordingly.
• Do not hesitate to speak out sternly when you feel uncomfortable with the way someone is touching you or talking to you, and get out of that situation.
• If you are going out with an unknown person be extra careful and try to go to a public place and not to a totally secluded area.
• Always tell some well wisher where you are going.
• Never use the same route often.

If unfortunately you have been sexually assaulted the have trust in yourself and be strong. It was not your fault so you do not have to feel any guilt for it. Give yourself some time to recover emotionally, mentally and physically. Share your feelings with someone you trust. It is very important to call the Women's Sexual Assault Centre and the police and also take medical help so that the assailant is put behind bars.
